No megaproject, no grand plan — sunshine simply got cheaper than the grid.

Rooftop and distributed solar went from about 10% of Pakistan's electricity in 2023 to roughly 28% in 2025, after ordinary citizens installed about 27 GW on homes, shops and farms in two years, per Ember and Renewables First.
Pakistan became the world's largest solar panel importer in 2024 (~17 GW in a single year), and over $12 billion in fuel imports have been avoided so far. The grid itself still has real problems and tariffs are rough for people left on it — the win here is the bottom-up speed, roughly the capacity of every fossil-fuel plant ever built in the country, added from rooftops in two years.
